NICAS

What is NICAS ?

NICAS stands for The National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme.

It is a rock climbing certificate course originating from the UK and is certified throughout the UK. The program aims to promote the development of rock climbing and also hopes to certify personal rock climbing achievements through formal courses.

The main purpose of the NICAS course design is to teach children over the age of 7 rock climbing skills and safety knowledge from basic to advanced, and to train students to become professional climbers through different levels of climbing training.

NICAS' Curriculum Core

NICAS mainly consists of two core modules: NICAS Climbing and NICAS Bouldering (for children aged 7 and above).

NICAS Climbing involves climbing using ropes and harnesses. This is usually done by two people, one climbing and one controlling the rope to keep the climber safe (the belayer). Protection technology is a key part of NICAS.

NICAS Bouldering involves “bouldering” – a form of climbing usually performed on small rocks or indoor walls. Bouldering has lower heights than top rope climbing. “Boulderers” are able to climb or jump off walls on their own (so no ropes and harnesses are required).

NICAS SCHEME STRUCTURE

NICAS Climbing (top rope climbing) and NICAS Bouldering (bouldering) each have five progressive levels of assessment, from novice to expert climbers. The program is divided into two parts, with a minimum of 80 hours required to complete Levels 1 to 4, and an additional year to complete Level 5. The first part covers levels 1 to 3, and the second part covers levels 4 and 5.

It is estimated that it will take about 2 – 3 months of training to complete the Level 1 course assessment, while Level 2 and Level 3 are expected to require about 6 months of training respectively.

When you register for a NICAS course at JUST CLIMB, you will receive a record log for Levels 1-3. Students will then receive a level 4-5 booklet.

After passing the assessment at each level, JUST CLIMB students will receive a NICAS certificate.
